This is a song about crossing to a different shore and how the boatman is the guiding spirit who ferries people across the river. It talks about how the boatman is the only beacon of light amidst the swirling darkness of the river. And about how his presence gives migrants a sense of hope & calm.

This is a recurring theme in Nitin’s set because he was brought up in different countries and considers his parents to have migrated similarly; wherein they were taken across the river to start afresh in a new land.

Tere Khayal – Nitin Sawhney feat. Prasad Khaparde & Ashwin Srinivasan, Coke Studio @ MTV Season 2
This song is inspired by the verses of poet Hiranya Ranjan Upadhyaya. The lyrics for this song however are written by his mother. It is a dark, brooding song about longing for someone you love. About closing your eyes, thinking of the one you love and unbeknownst to you, the tears start to flow. The alaap is performed on flamenco guitar.

Vachan – Nitin Sawhney feat. Nicki Wells & Samidha Joglekar, Coke Studio @ MTV Season 2This song is a poem written by Nitin’s mother. The poem simply talks about how people make fake promises. Samidha Joglekar and Nicki Wells sing harmonies while Mahesh’s unique aalaps add a surreal texture and color to the song. Nitin also uses the electric guitar for the first time in the set.

Longing – Nitin Sawhney feat. Nicki Wells & Ashwin Srinivasan, Coke Studio @ MTV Season 2This song is primarily about an overpowering sense of longing. Based on a poem written by Nitin’s mother, this song is about longing for a person, a life, a home land…

It is the chahat one has for various things in life one hasn’t received yet. This composition is very metaphoric and elegant.

Sunset – Nitin Sawhney feat.Samidha Joglekar & Ashwin Srinivasan, Coke Studio @ MTV Season 2Sunset is a song about rising up and standing up for oneself. It’s about keeping the faith that dusk is followed by bright, flaming dawn. It’s also about keeping one’s head above the water and never losing faith in oneself. And never hesitating to stand up for what one believes is right.

This song is loosely based on Nitin’s life in South Africa, where he went to school. The song showcases an element of alienation that one feels in a strange, new land. And the clashes that are inevitable because of power equations that form when different cultures come together.
